Nursery & Preschool
I love working with nurseries and preschools, and helping children have fun and develop key life skills and develop core competencies
Working across all age ranges, from 2 months - 5 years, I deliver Little Signers Club 'Sing, Sign & Rhyme(TM)' classes in your setting, delivering a different themed class each week using books, songs and BSL-based baby and toddler signing.
What Do the Classes Cover?
Baby Room: Tiny babies and staff learn how to sign for sleep, milk and nappy changes - without crying - plus fun songs for supporting developing motor skills and language early speech.
Toddler Room: Classes help with behaviours (kicking, hitting, throwing, biting) as well as improving meal time and potty learning communications, devloping speech and supporting early literacy, colour learning, fine motor skills and numeracy.
Preschoolers: Older children love learning to sign, to help with literacy, to share stories, for continued behavioural, meal time and toileting needs, as well as building confidence and speech development, especially where more than one language is spoken.
Jo began delivering weekly Baby Sign classes to our Nursery and Preschool at the beginning of 2019. We were in the midst of looking for some external weekly activities for the children and we felt that this was the perfect opportunity to incorporate a new element to under 5's communication.
Being in a rich multicultural setting, we have many children (and staff) who use different languages to communicate on a daily basis. Using a single sign language (BSL-based signing, in our case) gave everyone a unifying communication method that let everyone join in and learn. It is fun, engaging and interactive, which means the children were able to participate for longer periods of times.
We also found that over time Baby Sign was becoming more and more helpful for practitioners to use with children displaying emerging SEND needs. It is clear to us that this mode of communication is often preferred for those children struggling to express themselves and their needs.
Jo is an excellent trainer to both the staff and the children. She would do weekly sessions with all our children, not just the babies, and she has also delivered training to our staff at every INSET day session we have held (twice a year). This has further helped develop our practitioners' confidence in delivering the signs to the children.
Jo also delivered weekly virtual sessions to our parents during lockdown, which further cemented what the children had been learning at nursery and Preschool and helped carry this over into the home setting.
I cannot recommend Jo's sessions high enough. If she was still in London we'd have continued the weekly sessions indefinitely.
